When you think of skateboarding you think boys clad in helmets and knee pads doing impressive acrobatic-like moves with a board. Skateboarding bizarrely has its roots in surfboarding. Back in the 1950s, Californian surfers came up with the quirky idea of “surfing the streets”, so they took their boards to the streets of California and, well, skateboarding was born!

Parenting during these “tween” years is more complicated than I had imagined. My daughter and I are still close, but her friends are starting to play an increasingly large role in her life. It takes creative journaling to a new level and helps kids recognize and appreciate the positive aspects of one another. The result is a book that the child will treasure as it contains lists of a child’s positive traits, as identified by another person - as well as positive traits that the child has identified in her buddies.

In the book’s introduction, Schoenberg writes: “If you choose to complete this journal, here’s what I think will happen: You’ll begin to feel stronger and braver day by day, and your kindness and creativity will expand too. –Remove the dough from the pan and place on waxed paper.

–Divide the dough into four equal pieces.

–For each of the four pieces of dough, add approximately 10 drops of different colored food coloring, and knead until the color is well blended into the dough.

–Add approximately 8-10 drops of different essential oils or blends to each of the four pieces of dough and knead for about 60 seconds. If you find the scent of the dough is not strong enough, add a few more drops of the essential oil or blend.

(*Helpful hint: to make sure both the food coloring and the essential oil or blend stay in the dough and don’t drip off, create a well in the top of the piece of dough with your finger, drop the coloring or oil in the well, fold the dough so it closes over the well opening, then continue to knead the dough as normal.)

–Form these into egg shaped balls

–Store each piece of dough in a Ziploc bag, or other airtight container

–Sit them on some Easter grass on Easter Sunday - so they look and smell pretty!
